I should point out that there were no inhabitable planets around - my species is Aquatic and all the surrounding planets were dry. However, I still found myself lagging behind other empires in the early to mid-game, even had an empire declare war on me pretty much immediately after we met. I did fall behind on research, because I was focusing on credits to buy resources that I was unable to make in any significant amount. This is when I found out that just being Corporate increases the effect of empire size by default, which was quite annoying. I explored my immediate area, only went after systems that were "behind" chokepoints (from an outside perspective), and tried to get the basic strategic resources (motes, gases, crystals) inside my borders for later.įor traditions I picked Mercantile immediately, to get the policy that converts trade value into unity. I thought the changes to unity, particularly the planetary ascension mechanic, would make it ideal for a corporate empire to play tall, so I gave it a shot.
